A-L / M-Z

All-in - To have all your chips in the pot in a single hand

Bad Beat - To lose to a hand which when betting started was a huge underdog to your hand but subsequently improved due to the cards dealt.
Big Blind - This is the larger of the two blind bets and is the size of a first round bet
Big Slick - Nickname for AK
Blind - A compulsory bet that starts a game of poker, put in by the two players to the left of the dealer, the first player is the 'small blind', the second the 'big blind'
Board - The community cards on the table which everyone can see
Bottom Pair - The lowest pair available
Button - A device that indicates the dealer, typically a round disc, hence the name 'button'
Buy-in - The cost of joining a tournament or table

Call - To match a bet made by a previous player
Calling Station - A player that calls a lot and hardly ever raises or folds
Check - Not betting
Check-Raise - Checking and then raising a bet that someone after you has made
Connector - A pocket hand that consists of two cards next to each other in value, i.e. 9s 10d

Draw - Playing a hand that has the potential to develop into a winning hand if the right cards fall, i.e. 'drawing to a flush'

Early Position - This describes players immediately to the left of the blinds, said to be 'early' as they are the first players to bet

Fish - A bad player
Flop - The first 3 community cards that are dealt after the first round of betting is complete

Gutshot Straight - A straight created by an 'inside' card, i.e. you hold 4s 5d the flop comes 3s Ad Jh and the turn comes 2h 'filling' your straight

Heads-up - Describes a game that only two players are playing
Hole Cards - Cards that only you can see (also called pocket cards), used with the board to create the best 5 card hand

Kicker - A second, unpaired card that is used to decide the best hand between two similar hands, i.e. As Kd would beat Ah Qc if there was an ace on the board as Kings are higher than Queens

Late Position - This describes players immediately to the right of the dealer button, said to be 'late' as they are one of the last people to bet
Limp - Calling a bet
